NSW 7-Inch Water-Brake Dynamometer

Mid-Size High-Speed Engine Absorber

The NSW 7-inch water brake fills the gap between the compact 5-inch platform and the larger 9-inch automotive water brake.

It is suited to engines requiring greater torque absorption than the smaller brakes while retaining relatively compact dimensions and high-speed capability.

Single and Dual-Rotor Options

The absorber may be configured according to the application as a single- or dual-rotor system.

Single rotor is appropriate where lower rotating mass and compact packaging are priorities.

Dual rotor increases hydraulic working area and potential torque and horsepower capacity.

Selecting the Water Pump

Pump selection should be based on the maximum horsepower actually being absorbed, not simply the 7-inch brake diameter.

For lower-power applications, the NSW minimum reference is approximately:

1 GPM per 20 HP

with sufficient dynamic inlet pressure.

Once the installation enters higher horsepower levels, NSW recommends moving toward the larger-system guideline:

Pump capacity up to approximately 15 GPM per 100 HP at approximately 60 PSI pump capability.

This should be considered system capacity rather than mandatory continuous brake consumption.

Water-System Design

A properly designed installation should include:

reservoir or reliable water source
centrifugal or equivalent water pump
pressure regulator
pressure gauge
manual or automatic load-control valve
adequately sized supply hose
unrestricted discharge plumbing

The final brake configuration should be selected using maximum torque, horsepower and RPM, not horsepower alone.
